Is it normal to have to re-verify a site?

I just checked my webmaster tools account and it says my site needs to be verified.
This site ahs been up for years and I last verified it in Jan. Is it normal to have to re-verify a site?
I then logged out and back into webmastertools and it then showed no sign of my site at all. It is completely gone.
What could be happening here?

I've had to reverify a few in the past... maybe they drop the verification if ever the site was unreachable?

Can happen if your 404 not found page is customized, and returns a 200. Google checks for both:
123455abcd-verification
Non_exist-123455abcd-verification

If the later returns a 200 page found, google would for security reasons not acknowledge the site as verified.

It seems that once it fails verification they never never check it again until you manually say 'umm, guys?'
A bit silly.
and 'site problems' causes the verification to fail
