Duplicate title challenge on dynamic pages

 9:34 am on Jul 5, 2008 (gmt 0)

Yes, I've known it is important to have unique titles and descriptions, but now we are getting info from GWT, it is highlighting duplicates that I had perhaps been ignoring.

Most of my dynamic pages are no problem, it is relatively easy to feed varirables (that were either fed to the page or that page has pulled from a database) into both the title and description.

I have a problem however on pages where I use a fully zoomable and scrollable map (my own map) and the page displays information relevant to that area.

The only unique description of the info for the individual pages is the x and y coordinates of the displayed map.
Is it really worth putting these coordinates into the title and description?

In this situation it would be nice to be able to put a thumbnail of the map in the description, but I guess that is not possible.

Why not just block versions of the map that contain a variable within your robots.txt?

Do your users really need every possible permutation of your map indexed in Google?

I had previously blocked as I was concerned about near duplicate content but had recently unblocked it incase I wanted to put adsense on the page - though I haven't done so.

you can block googlebot from accessing the page if you want, and still let the adsense bot get to it. just do different rules for each in your robots.txt
