Google page count - almost random variations

We have been watching closely our SERPs all year long. A top 5 for years, we're now ranked 12 on our main phrase. All this year has been a rollercoaster for us, from 5 to 7 to 9 to 13 back to 4 for an hour then 12 again(until now) and sometimes 4 for a iny while. The only thing that's constant now is the page count: it's not being constant at all. Let me explain.

Right now:
"Results 1 - 10 of about 2,390,000 for..."

10 minutes ago:
"Results 1 - 10 of about 1,690,000 for..."

30 minutes ago:
"Results 1 - 10 of about 4,000,000 for..."

2 hours ago:
"Results 1 - 10 of about 20,320,000 for..."

Anyone else getting similar wild variations on their SERPs? What does this mean?

Thanks in advance.
