Webmaster Central Showing Increased Backlinks

Just logged into google webmaster tools and to my surprise the backlinks for the sites I manage have gone through the roof! I suppose we are in for a backlink update, pr update earlier than usual as it's probably already complete on google's end...reasoning we are seeing shifting in SERP's.

I don't think there will be a public PR update (toolbar PR) this soon - but Vanessa Fox did say that they were working to give better data to site owners inside the Webmaster Tools account, where only they can see it. This will keep owners a bit closer to the present time data that Google is actually using. Real PR is being updated continually - but only exported for public view on the toolbar every 3 months or so. The public link: results get changed a bit more frequently, but they don't mean very much -- just a sample of all the links that they switch around. I see an increase also: Month Ago: 131,280 external links
Today: 178,137 external links

Showing a definite increase here too. However, at the moment only the totals are being displayed, the lists of actual links aren't showing the latest data and some (e.g. for newer pages) are empty. Seems to have been a positive (for me) change in ranking too.

Big increase for my main site from a week ago to today - more than doubled.

Thank goodness ... on the 6th it was only showing a few backlinks for us and they weren't the good ones (mainly scrapers)

I would not worry too much about the scrapers. Google is still not showing links in the webmaster tools like yahoo is for us though.

not only that but its also showing anonymous proxy browsing as links. interesting. wonder if they carry PR :)
