January 2007 Google SERP Changes - part 3

I have a few terms left in google that rank well, I wanted to find out why they still ranked well. Here is my conclusion so far,

using a site:#*$!x (keyword here), I search for keywords that used to ranked well in google.

Some keywords pull up as much as 15,000 pages, some 11,000+

For keywords on MY site that was UNDER 400 result or so (not a few thousand), the results REMAINED in Google ranking, top 10 or so.

For internal searches on keywords with more than a few hundred, it dropped off the chart.

I think I am being penalized for heavy internal linking or keyword usage on my pages, but I am not sure how to overcome this since I have a large site and I am using product titles to navigate

for example

home : department : Product a:

product b
product c
product d

and product b would be

home : Department : Product B

product c
product d

Now if you multiply this by a couple thousand products, you can see why there will be a lot of links to any particular keyword and I think I am being penalized for it.

IS google tell us to kill good navigation to get ranked

Basically, all the pages will be

home : Department
Product (x)

and NOTHING ELSE

I guess they are trying to get rid of affiliate farms, but legitimate sites are getting penalized.

One more observation from my side regarding my biggest problem - pages that are supplemental.

On January the 25th I have bookmarked 15 pages from my site right after Googlebot read them. Just to track what exactly will happen. All of these pages have been supplemental before with cachedates from around January 3th.

Yesterday, around 10 of them had a new cachedate (25th) and have made it out from the supplemental index. Today, all of them have the old cachedates and are marked as supplemental again.

Don't like...

As said in my post on page 12, I do think that my (other sites) will return, be cause this is a big update it just takes a little longer, also with this site I have it always return to last in the update and today I see the site rank again for the main keyword, so we are nearing the end of this update, also im happy again it always tears a little on the ners, be cause you never know.

A little tip "NEVER CHANGE YOUR SITE IN A UPDATE"

Wolflover :

Yes, I am joking to make myself feel better.

I know Google doesnt owe me anything, but as you said , without us, there would be no Google poewr, too.
And, when our friend use us to earn nice money, and then cut it down 80 % it hurts badly.

But its sunny today in Sarajevo, afer few days of snow, so lets be happy :

PS. How do you quote my message, I cant find a way to do that on this forum?

On one of my sites it looks as if they deploy smething, pull it back, deploy, pull it back ..

PS. How do you quote my message, I cant find a way to do that on this forum?

Put in between [ quote ] [ /quote ] and omit the spaces

I know Google doesnt owe me anything, but as you said , without us, there would be no Google poewr, too.

Depends on he corporate line imo. If you do no evil and then deploy search engines in China fighting free speech and play with millions of webmasters minds every single day, mostly make your money by using other poples hard work and then don't pay while other people classify your pictures, intend to pull eveything that has been written and is out of copyright and scan it in, while your supposedly on this noble mission to fight spam, the odd critical eye has to be raised.

The annoying bit is the pretense of holiness .. I have not read yet as bad attacks on yahoo, as they seem t be just a company and don't employ knights in shining armour battling to rid the world of evil .. :)

In reality they just seem to be as ordinary as everybody else .. trying to make a buck or a billion ...

Late last night I saw my hits go up, nothing that has happened over the last 2 weeks after the January 14th update.
This morning I have had more visitors then an average day over the last 2 weeks.

Yeayyyyhhh....

Hope it'll last for a while :)

I'm seeing a ton of .co.uk and .au sites in my category. I'd think Google's still playing with the "knob" here as it seems elementary to me that they wouldn't want these sites showing up here in the US... These serps are completely shuffled from just a few days ago so I gather this just happened today or yesterday.

Come on G, take a look at your serps and fine tune things. :-)

Not a big deal especially under the present "fluctuations" ;-)

Maybe a backlinks update on several DCs, like this set!

[64.233.183.104...]

G is having problems indexing new sites again: they get crawled, show up in the index for 1-2 days and then disappear for several days.

The only thing we have seen in the serps is fluctuating PR and back links. Google is baiting all the chasers.

We monitor fifty keywords and have not seen the top 3 budge on any data center for well over a month. Everything below 3 is constantly seeming to change.

Hope you guys can confirm if it is the case with anyone of you or just my client

I wouldn't call it "they keep chopping off his website every now and then".

In the spirit of Matt Cutts Ever Data Refreshes, more accurately to call it:

"they keep refreshing his website every now and then" :-)

Well, two months now... Come on, wake up Google, wake up!

Since they switched since 2 months on some daily update scheme, that might be it.. Everflux they named it like that and that's what is happening. Others would call it everchaos, but that might be just cynical.. :)

Or does no one remember the everflux comments when Big Diddy was installed?

So prepare for building domino chains (aka your business) while a RS 8 earthquake is permanently switched on .. Google is pulling the rug under your feet and shaking it wildly.

Just curious:
When was your sites hited for the first time?

My site was first on april 2006 and recovered after 301 redirect to actual domain, then on 26 june 2006 and recovered after 50 days after deleting some OBL's, then on 17 december 2006 and not recovered yet.

One of my sites just came back for almost all keywords. Its first time from 27.12 , if we except 5 hours period on 15.1.

I hope this time will last at least 6 hours :)

I have made some changes to this sites. I had a text that was sitewide placed, but few days ago, I made it to be only on homepage.
Has this helped anything or not, question is now! :)

One of my sites came back on Sunday and it looked really good. I posted here and said "Hope it'll last" and someone said "No, it won't"....
Yesterday it went from 6,000+ unique on Sunday to 4,000+ unique. Today, hopefully, It'll do the same as yesterday at least.... Looks promising (?) but you never know.

Most people are waiting but I didn't but I think whatever happened a month ago or so, is what shows up right now, so the reason you see changes now is not because you stepped on the lid to the man-hole this morning :)

you know it puts a smile on my face when you look back at the old days and read things like bretts guide to building a succesful website. He was very adamant about small pages. Ok i know it was pre-broadband days but hey, a lot of people are still on dialup, especially in developing countries.

I was looking at a top 5 destination "city widgets" search. In the top ten there are pages at 79kb, 184kb, 93kb, 109kb, 210kb and 68 kb. And those larger pages are just a bunch of deeper links. I think we need a new guide.

Hi Guys,

Guess what, after the recovery on Sunday Goggle has gone and gave the SERP's in the UK a good ol'shake again and guess what. The brown scum is back on the top and the decent content filled pages are no where to be seen.

I have never belived this "2 days on 2 days off" talk, just simply because I couldn't see a company like Google doing that. Surely what we all want is consistant results. That way the users (searches/customers) know exactly where to find what. At the moment one day you find good results the next its all gone crazy again and the page that was number 1 is now on page 5.

Thanks Again Google, Your The Best! NOT
