Webmaster Central - Suggestions for improvement
Whitey

msg:3060917

It's been a big step forward by the Google Search Quality team over recent months in communicating with SEO's and site owners. Especially through these major updates.

But there's still a lot of anxiety out there by everyday folks on how to impliment and manage a website. It kinda reminds me of the days before Microsoft brought in Windows when people were struggling with complex language to do their tasks.

It would be good if there was improvement in the systematic method of identifying key quality control elements from a site owners perspective and a way in which this can be better presented, than the way things are currently done.

Maybe a check list of pass and fail.

Some of this is well on the way - [ hat's off ] - but as some is way off, isn't this the time to put your 2 cents worth in and give some valuable feedback, perhaps with some urgent priority areas?

For me the critical areas for systematic analysis are:

-Site Architecture [ big improvements here recently ]
-IBL's [ better analysis to ascertain quality ]
-Duplicate content [ and the various types ]
-Banning
-Penalties

Maybe some comments on the effects of each error would be good, so that webmasters can plan for the implications of these issues.

What would you like to see happening to support you better?

Did any of you ever see updated statistics in WMC?

I have a question. I submitted my sites for reinclusion via the sitemap webmaster tools area. If some decision is made regarding a site, does one get a notice of it via email or in the tools area? Thanks.

How about making those wonderful google alerts part of webmaster central as well. Helps find people scraping your content and other nastiness.

It would be helpful if we logged in to find that info instead of relying on emails which may get lost in our overloaded in box.

Just wanted to apologize for my customer service comment in this thread, I'm just a little angry and frustrated.

Another suggestion I have is that I'd like to see Your page with the highest PageRank and Common Words filled in for subdomains as well as the main www domain. For my site, the subdomains have always just displayed "Data is not available at this time." in those tools and the main www domain seems to display info for the whole site.

I don't want to implement site maps due to the stuff I read on this site saying that site maps "could" screw up a site's ranking - I would love to see Google once and for all name site maps safe to implement - for now I am waiting for them to get the bugs out.

My feature request is to be able to tell Google tracking paramters that it should ignore, so that links with tracking URLS are not seen as separate to non-tracking URLs. (A bit like the www non www feature, but on the end of the URLs).

So reporting comprehensively on bans, penalties etc at this early juncture is just so important, in my view, ....

errrr ..... think you missed the fact that this would be a VERY useful tool for the spammers ...... more useful to spammers than to the majority of webmasters

the majority of competent webmasters should be able to build a website and find it appear in google and other engines in due course

and if they can't, most likely they ain't as competent as they like to think

i'd rather google just fixed their f*****g spider to stop it hammering my servers with 30,000 hits on a 1000 page site ..... (crawl delay would be nice!)
oh and if they'd just list the pages like other engines do - i mean, what's all this supplemental nonsense? (dont answer!)

i don't feel a need to watch googles attempts to get webmasters to eat, live and breath google - cos not matter how much time you spend at webmaster central (or whatever they call it this week), it's far more productive to move on, look at the wider internet picture and just wait for everything to fall into place - works fine for me

the links are working in the sitemap area now with my ie6 though it still goes to portuguese no matter what, i can add the eng part and then it fixes but it will always go to portuguese after clicking the sitemaps link, so i bookmark the eng version

ok just an update regarding my situation - it seems that all of the webmaster guidelines violation comments have been removed from my sites (just says they are not in index) and two of the sites now say they are in the index but when I check they are not there - not sure if they have been reincluded (thanks if so) or if its just showing a mistake with an old database, etc

Ok, now all my sites are showing as being in the index - I guess this means my request for reinclusion was granted? Maybe it takes a while for the sites to re show in the index when doing a site search. The portuguese problem has disappeared.

whoops, premature on the portuguese problem disappearing, I had been going through the saved "eng" version straight to the sites. When I go to the webmaster tools section through Google groups, eveything in the account goes Portuguese. Not a big deal cause I can go with my saved link but just thought I would point it out. Sorry for the confusion.

I really want to figure out your Portuguese language issue. Can you post about this in the Webmaster Google Group so we can do some troubleshooting? (I don't want to bog down this thread.)

Vanessa Feedback:

I posted in this locked thread about the +Tools dropdown not working in FFox.

Today, it is working! Without changing anything at my end.

We all know that Google has multiple datacentres with multiple versions of their results spread across them.

Which datacentre is supposed to match up with whatever WMC reports to you? Can you get to see different WMC reports by going directly to a different datacentre to log into WMC?

Hi G1smd, I am not in the know about data centres, but the statistics in WMC , SERPS showing your domain, are looking fresh,,

I am just hoping that this is almost live cos the language in the screen has changed,,

One hopes its not a one off update before it slides into stasis for the next few months or so,,

Please don't be like that other pseudo search engine , with toolbar generated rankings that no one pays any attention to :-)

I'd love to be able to specify what the preffered home page is.

Something like:

[x] "/"
[ ] "/default.asp"
[ ] "/Default.asp"

vite_rts,

Something is happening indeed! When I get back into the office on Tuesday (on vacation today), I'm going to do a blog post that explains the details. We just refreshed the statistics and have changed the way we aggregate them. Previously, the data was averaged over three weeks. Now, the data is averaged over one week. This more granular data should be more useful overall and will have a faster refresh.

And great, Angonasec. I was going to ask you if that issue had been fixed. Thanks for reporting back.

Just following up on developments regarding my sites out of the index situation. It appears that I have been reincluded back into the index (I submitted a reinclusion request) because the webmaster guidelines warning is gone and my sites are now showing as being in the index. I can find the sites in a google search for domain and at keyword rank. Just want to say thanks to Google and everyone else.
