Just saw almost 2 page ad in New York Times for Google's new Display Ads...they are telling everyone to "Watch This Space" and here is link to video they are showing.
Looks like those old and dated display ads are going to get some new life...should be fun to see how this turns out.

My guess is ads allowing users to interact with them, like mini apps within ad blocks.
