Let us say my gmail username is blue.widget@gmail.com. Every now & then I used to get mails addressed to bluewidget@gmail.com, with a link below the mail id from gmail saying blue.widget & bluewidget are the same & they gmail dosen't distinguish between the two i.e. it ignores the period. Almost all these mails were meant for someone else. This used to happen occasionally & I have been ignoring this till date. I have had this account for close to 4 years & is my primary email id. Now someone with a very similar name to mine has gone & signed up bluewidget@gmail.com on some network which generates huge amount of spam. Till a few weeks back I used to hardly get a few spam mails a day now I get 100 an hour - all addressed to bluewidget@gmail.com.
I got bugged & decided to investigate further. Since Gmail has been claiming that blue.widget & bluewidget are the same, I tried to login into bluewidget@gmail.com, & I get the message that my password is wrong. So I tried a password recovery for bluewidget, google sent the password recovery mail to the yahoo mail id I had linked when I created blue.widget, & I used the link to reset my password. Then tried to login into bluewidget & again it refused to accept my password.
Why cant I login into bluewidget? It looks like someone else thinks bluewidget is their account id.
Am absolutely flummoxed by this. Can someone throw light on this?
