I would like to start a Blog site for users, so that they can set up their own blogs like this [user.example.com....] Is there any software available for this?

LiveJournal is actually open source, but it may require some hacks to create the journals at a subdomain level.

Userland, one of the pioneers in blogging software, offers its Manila service either as a standalone or hosted service. [manila.userland.com...]
This is what Salon uses to power the blogs it offers to users, but I don't know of any other clients.

I would strongly recommend a sofwtare called blogware from tucow <snip> . Very powerful and intutive.
