Hey there,

I found a tool that offers a robot.txt generator, It says if i want to disallow spam bots then i should use this. I also found this near the bottom and moved it to the top. Can anyone give me some feedback is it all junk? and should just have the normal...?

In the friendliest way possible, I'd say don't put anything on your Web site that you don't fully understand.

Some of the user-agents in that list won't ever check robots.txt. Or if they do, they won't pay any attention to it.

Others on the list will check and obey robots.txt, but there's a question as to what the result will be. Just for example, Xenu's Link Sleuth will check robots.txt and obey it, and report that the link to your site that it is checking is broken. So, what's that mean to you? Well, some Webmasters use Xenu to check the outgoing links on their site. If Xenu reports the link is broken, they just might remove a link to your site without doing a manual browser check to confirm that it's really broken. So, you can lose valuable incoming links if you block Xenu.

Review your access logs or stats, and add Disallows to robots.txt only for those robots which fetch and obey robots.txt, and then Disallow only those resources (pages, images, scripts) that you don't want them to fetch.

To actually block some of the malicious user-agents in the list, stronger measures are needed. For example, you can use mod_rewrite or mod_access and mod_setenvif on Apache Server to deny access based on the user-agent or IP address. In contrast to robots.txt, methods like this don't depend on the voluntary compliance of the user-agent.
