redirect without confusing spiders

I changed some directory names for SEO that I want to back off of. Spiders have indexed some of those links. The directories ultimately contain dynamic URLs. Should I 301 redirect the old directory to the new directory? Or should I even worry about it (duplicate content filter and all) I don't wish to game the engines or create the impression I'm trying to.
