Did you re-test it again, i.e. put the robots.txt back up and monitor the server?
If not, it might very well have been coincidental -- the server went down for whatever reason around the same time.
robots.txt alone cannot prevent visitors from hitting your website.
Shot in the dark... how close are you to your storage space quota?

Yes, I posted new by accident when I intended to reply to the thread regarding an uploaded robots.txt file that apparently caused the server to disallow incoming traffic.
