Hi,
first, is there a way to determine the source of a specific IP?

Second, is there a way to block it with htaccess?

Thanks,
Brakkar

deny from <ip address>

With regards the source of an IP, that's an open question because an IP address _is_ considered a "source" as far as the Internet is concerned...

brakkar,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]!

Use ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, JPNIC, and KORNET (do a search for these) to look up IP-related information. Each of these covers only part of the world, so you may have to hop from one to the other to find what you need.

See [flumps.org...] for a nice ip address layout list. Unfortunately it is not updated since a long time, but most of the information is still correct, the ownership of ranges does not change too often.
This contains the owner of the addresses/blocks/subnets, so if someone offending you, you are able to see in the list which provider you might need to contact about a certain machine/connection.

>block it with htaccess?
Here's a specific example. I use it to block data miners, whose robots are rude and greedy.

order allow,deny
deny from 63.148.***.
allow from all

a week ago I was referred to a site that had an automated htaccess file generator for things like disabling hotlinking and other things, the site is down now and it says the account is "banned".?

<snip>

I found it to be a useful tool because my past experiences writing htaccess files were pretty lame and did not always work

is there any other automated htaccess file generator out there?

regards-
The Lazy Webmaster
