Is Openness Worth the Risk?

I recently started a blog for a very specific niche and I know little about Blogger beyond it's affiliation with Google.

Should I allow nonregistered users to comment on my blog? I'd like as much user interaction as possible but I don't know the risks. Is there a significant risk of spam? I know I can moderate users' comments, but I'd really rather not play policeman. Ideally I would like to allow comments without my approval but have the power to later delete them at my discretion. Is this or anything like it possible?

Thanks

Make sure you turn on Captcha - that will help a lot with unwanted comments.
