Things we have bought that we just had to have . . .
but never put to good use, or, well, not the intended use

I bought a nice cell phone PDA 2 years ago.

It sits in its charger on top of the rolltop desk in my home office. It sits there all the time and never leaves. Never.

That way, in case my rolltop desk ever has an emergency, it can call me at my other office.

Any you?

I could probably write a book about my girlfriend and her penchant for not using her "had to have's".

I like to think I'm a little more economical, as long as you don't count my 200 DVDs that Netflix has now rendered useless. Speaking of useless, my poor gym membership hasn't been getting the love it deserves either.

I blame it on the snow...

1) Epson colour inkjet, used to print out a half dozen photos before the nozzles got so clogged by lingering cat hair that the thing is useless except as a convenient place to pile my leather day timer binder thing.

2) Leather day timer binder thing, which still has the original pages in it from 2002. Second half of 2002 is blank, so I suppose I could reuse them again in... 2019?

3) Wireless-G Broadband router. Brand new. Thought I could use it to network this machine with a laptop... never happened, probably never will.

i could go on and on

$300 phone (Nokia 6230) when it first came out - Cingular gives them away for $100 with subscription now. I don't use a third of it's features. But I can, if i ever need to :D

Cardioid microphone, tie-clip microphone, wireless microphone, battery driven 4 channel mixer and 3 x 200 watts halogen lamp - all from an eBay auction when I decided to set out to become the next Robert Rodriguez guerilla filmmaker. I settled for kids and a 9-5 job instead. The equipment sits still accusingly in the aluminum box...

My original beer brewing "kit" has been mostly replaced with upgraded equipment. ;)

Things I haven't used (OK, they've each been used 2-5 times...): a jewelry/beadmaking kiln, a bread machine, an electric juicer, a henna tattoo kit...

*ahem*

An FM transmitter to stream my MP3s to my stereo. Hooked it up once, had static, never used it again.

A 802.11g adapter for my Xbox. I intended to use it to play online, but never have. Also, my Xbox is... <ahem> special now so it won't work w/ xbox live anyway. Still use the adapter occasionally for FTP, but not anywhere near enough to justify the purchase.

Oh, and I just HAD to have a 40gig iPod. I've barely used 5 gig. Don't have the time to rip all the songs to the thing. Could have had a much cheaper one and it would have done fine.

that's like my nikon d70 I bought for $1200. My (ex) gf used it more than i did.

I've been saving it for when I decide to become a playboy photographer...

"Take out dinners" every week. I get no use out of them, and I have a feeling I should try to "use them" and burn some of it off... ()() hehe

A voice recorder - I thought I could record all those brilliant ideas I get while driving, but when I play it back, the guy just sounds a complete idiot.

I bought a Fondue Kit on a whim about 3 years ago, gather's dust next to the sandwich toaster and the fruit juicer (both of these see a little use - annual would be generous).

Fax machine. I don't even use the phone on it. Laser range finder. Critters I want to shoot at are never so far away that I need to know how far away they are. Psion PDA. Gathers dust in the briefcase I never use. Cellphones were rendered useless when I moved here. No signal. They gather dust next to the fingerprint ID lock for my laptop.

Phones. Lots of them. I buy them, don't like them, and never seem to return them.

my nikon d70 I bought for $1200

Geeze, I have the same camera and 5 different lenses. I use it almost daily! There are lots of webmasters here who would likely love to buy it from you ... for a deal! :)

Hmmm ... let's see. Things I don't use:

  • Hundreds of dollars worth of watercolour paints - no time to paint
  • Hundreds of extra long glue sticks for crafts - no time to make crafts
  • $1,000.00 - 33" TV - no time to watch it
  • $300.00 DVD/VCR player - same as above
  • Fax machine I bought in Boston at the PubCon - never send faxes anymore
  • Pasta making machine - Oh please - If there ever was anything to suck up your time! I buy my pasta off the shelf!

There's more, but this is getting embarassing - such waste!

Ah, I forgot the hand-crank pasta machine...

...in my defense, most of my silly purchases were from thrift stores and yard sales, for <$20. (Except the jewelry/bead kiln... and the rest of the glassworking supplies... hehehe)

I can justify blowing $10-15 on almost any small kitchen appliance. ;)

    Pogs

Never heard of them either limbo but found this [badfads.com] at the bad fads museum.

They're small paper ('least thats what it looks like) discs with pictures of people on them which you collect.

Oh, I will use it :) I'm sure there's plenty of neat stuff to photograph in my upcoming 8 month trip all over Europe. Although my tiny Canon sd200 will be right in my pocket too.

I only have the stock lens. What else do you have?

Yeah, they're mostly cardboard, but sometimes you get plastic ones (if you're lucky!). They don't always have pictures of people on though, the ones my little brother used to collect (this is how I know all this, in case you were wondering) had cartoons and illustrations on.

For my part, I have a stomach exercising thing I bought, but it makes my stomach hurt so I figure that can't be good for me. I now hang my clothes on it.
