Just to be sure I got that right: the two holes on the sides can be used to fix it to a wall, but it doesn't have to be fixed an a wall?

Well to a wall or something vertical, perhaps a post.

What does the word. on the bottom of the unit say?

The hole on the bottom is actually the back of the unit, and not the bottom lip.
