There may not be enough ads to display relative to your content. How much content is on your page?

about 300 words

Amount of content isn't relevant. There may not be ad inventory for the focus of the page--the dominant keywords.

It will still depend on what Adsense has determined to display on your site based on its initial crawl. It may take a few days for Adsense to recrawl, breaking down your keywords to show relevant ads.

It will also depend on how Adsense matches up your content with Adwords advertisers. Adsense can't display what is doesn't have.

Until then, you may want to consider using collapsing ads so it won't disply blank areas.

What is your content generally about?

home repairs etc - on other pages the ads run fine

There should be plenty of advertisers for your content. I suggest waiting until the page is recrawled (1-2 weeks) or rename the page and get recrawled in a few hours.

Putting your site through the following link and seeing the keyword density of that page might help.

It sometimes takes a day or two for ads to appear in second or third ad units, so this could be the reason why you aren't seeing them.
