|Adsense targeted ads on some pages, generic on others?|
I have a fairly large site with one major theme, and sub-categories related to that theme.
I'm seeing a lot of variability with Adsense targeted ads showing on some pages, and generic showing on others.
There is no obvious difference between the pages.
Any ideas what I should be looking for, as a reason for why the targeting isn't working?
BTW, the Adsense ads have been in place for several weeks, so it isn't that they are newly added.
By generic do you mean the public service ads, or just ads that are more general to your content than specific?
Ad availability is one possibility. Are these generic pages always showing generics, or do they show more targeted ads sometime and generic ads at other times?
Another possibility is that your content does not match closely enough to any of their available ads, especially if some of your pages are dealing with more obscure subjects.
Navigation bar content can also affect the ads shown, as AdSense takes into account all the content on the page, including any site headers, footers, and any navigational links, not just the "meat" of the page. Are the generic ads showing up on pages that use a different template that might be heavier on this kind of content? This is something else to consider.

I've definitely noticed that. Ads for one of my affiliate partners often show up on pages where AdSense can't find a targeted match. AdSense is obviously seeing the merchant's name in my column of affiliate links and supplying a matching ad.
Sorry, by generic, I meant the public service ads.
The pages of the site are all designed the same way, so the navigation bar shouldn't be an issue on some pages, and not on others, and the themes of every section definitely have ads available via Adsense.
Sometimes targeted ads will appear on the pages in question, but most of the time the public service ads are all that show up.
