Ouch! Maybe it's a good idea to dedicate an hour of free time each day to walking or some other kind of good, aerobic exercise to help shed those new pounds ;) It's so easy to get caught up in spending time sitting in front of the computer... time flies by and before you know it, three or four hours has passed and nothing has been accomplished. I'm glad to hear, though, that your Adsense business is going so well :)

well this all has to do with self-motivation i think. i did the same but my life has never been fuller, i no longer stress out or have to answer "yes, sir" but spend less and less time at the PC as the sites run themselves. i am too busy socialising, going to the gym or travelling (this month 3 weeks on a pan european tour) i've also lost about 14 lbs in weight and have never felt healthier. it may come to an end any day if i get the dreaded banned letter but meanwhile, i am enjoying life for what it's worth and doing things i could never dream of doing if i was still a 9 to 5 boy. not trying to offend but it may be you have become lulled into a comfortable sense of security with the adsense income which leads to apathy and complacency. make a list of things you want to do and then do them..you have the money and the time now so no excuses :) good luck!

I'm quite surprised you are not motivated to create additional sites or allocate additional timeto your existing sites to make a better return. Also, do you have any concerns with competition considering they may be working overtime to catch up?

Just worked my last spring, I usually do corporate meetings as a AV Tech computer support here in AZ. Man, the free food and the big cookies really get to me after a few months(gained 20lbs). Well too hot here so we don't work in the summers so I am off now. My web site used to be a paid product but now it's free downloads with Adsense/YPN. It has been slowly ramping up since Dec to the point where it can totally support me now with no problem. I get up everday at 6am (my girfriend goes to her day job, four blocks from the house) feed the cats water the guarden and check my mail and numberes (and see if anything funny happened here, like I joind a scam site and got a nasty letter, oops). By 8am I am out till 10am Mon tennis Tues climb a mountain Wed Bike riding Thurs tennis Fri climb a mountain Sat Bike ride Sun sleep-in Comeback eat work 4hrs take a nap for 2hrs work for 2 hours more and kick back. Lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks it will take another 6 weeks to loose the rest. And I am going to stay like this, not going back to work in the fall, I've had it! 49

I do update and maintain my site. I just don't have the motivation to work as hard as I did in years past. Maybe I'm just at a point where I don't need to put in as many hours and I should get out and enjoy life more.

Hey G_Smitty It seems to me that you traded one rut for another. You need to put together a list of stuff you'd like to do - ask your friends what they would do if they didn't have to work. That'll give you some ideas. Most importantly, pick thinks that are going to challenge your mind and body. Try Salsa. DM

At some point greed and workaholic fanaticism have to give way to quality of life, that point is different for all people. I don't want to be rich just mildly comfortable and live to 100 (or have enough cash to afford my clone so I can leave him my software & AdSense biz).

Hey G_Smitty I bet you can't get another website to double what your main one is doing. Maybe a website dedicated to those that lost their drive. I would have gone 1 yr ago, but thanks to paxil, i too can now have a fulfilling life. (reverse psychology) :P

I spend most of the day on my computer and have been using Adsense for almost three years. My health hasn't been great and have been in the hospital three times for various ailments. Don't have too many friends either because I work at home. I did join a gym last month so I can exercise more and get into shape.

Not that I'm making enough to quit my day job. In fact, I actually like my day job and it keeps me sharp and keeps me socializing more. Even if my business does grow to the point that I'm making 2X my day salary (.. which is my goal.. ) , I probably would still keep my day job or at least volunteer. Let's face it, it doesn't really take that much time to maintain a site. What.. 1-2 hours / day? I found that cycling about 1 hour a day keeps the wieght off Smitty so try to make it a daily routine. I lost 50lbs. doing this over several months and feel great. You have to keep yourself motivated at something or your brain turns into slush.

Im the same way, i spend most of my days at home on the computer. But some perks are that I never miss anything on tv, my girlfriend and lots of my friends are college students so Im always able to go out and hang out. Another thing that is a positive for me is that Im able to work out everyday. I was overweight before adsense, eating out because i never had time between two jobs and web design, no exercise at all. Now that im home most of the time and have free time, I always make it to my apartment complex gym and run a couple miles, lift some weight etc.

Interesting discussion people - really, it's very interesting. I've only recently moved to using AdSense (as my post count would reveal). I am a work-at-home person. I run two main businesses, with quite a lot of minor sub-projects within. A lot of the time most people are getting 'bogged down' in the job when there isn't enough diversity -or- there's something much bigger on their shoulders weighing them down (debts?). In no way does AdSense currently bring in enough for me to quit my other two businesses (email content filtering softare and model aircraft design) but hopefully if I can build up enough good content with one of the businesses there's a possibility that I could switch. Definately if there's bit pressure from above I find myself unable to do real work, instead I sit at the PC watching AdSense tick over every hour and constantly am hitting "Check email" in the vain hope that someone will be sending me a miracle. In reality, you have to go out there and make that miracle happen.

I give myself a daily 1 hour motorbike ride, live to ride and ride to live.. It keeps me alive. What this reminds me of is how AdSense has made discounts for direct advertisers on my site less likely, unless they pay 1 1/2 times of what AS makes I won't take them, I have been thinking a lot about it lately, and I think I should take on more advertisers even at less than AS earnings to diversify, but as the OP said, it does tend to make you lazy one way or the other.

The problem I have is with motivation: I seem to either be way too motivated or lack motivation alltogether. When the business is thriving I can't get myself to keep working on my websites, while when traffic plunges I panic and start spending days and nights in front of my computer trying to make up for the wasted time. None of these 2 situations is good for you. Although I wouldn't get a 9-5 again, I believe that generally, nine to fivers have a more balanced life.

Maybe we should start a Adsense Anonymous group for all the people that are making so much money they are not motivated to have fun and spend it. My recommendation is get up and go out and smell the roses and do something fun.

When you have a home-based business which requires long hours on the computer, these things don't happen naturally. You have the make them happen. I find a "work at home" environment strips down the healthy routine, like socializing and exercisizing, which would naturally occur in a 9-5 job.

Thanks bts111 I'll look into that lunar real estate, I was considering the Outback but that sounds better. So you know the neighborhood and can hook me up with nice interplanetary broadband, cool. I guess you EFT? or do you land at the GooGplex each month and pick-up you check. (you are probably getting paid first now) G_Smitty Turn the computer off, get out of the chair and go take a walk for an hour (do that every day), then progress to other things from there. Lower your food intake by 25%, don't change what you eat just lower it. One other thing, make sure you eat within one hour of waking up in the morning. Go past that the body thinks you are starving it and turns most of the food you eat the rest of the day into fat. [edited by: Khensu at 2:35 pm (utc) on June 3, 2006]
