May 5, 06 Weekend: eCPM Down?
greedy player

Msg#: 13897 posted 2:28 pm on May 6, 2006 (gmt 0)

Since 5th may my adsense eCPM has dropped about half... this is a serious problem because my daily income has dropped half to.

Anyone else experiencing half ecpm? since 5th May.

Same here. eCPM is down more than half. First four days of May earnings were terrific, but now for 5th and 6th (so far) earnings are way down.

It's strange, everybody's complaining about dropping income, but mine is growing steadily. The amount of visitors I am getting is growing slowly, but my eCPM is getting better and better (over $20 at the moment)

For the record, my site is about 15 months old and has only about 5k uniques a month.

its strange that you mention the 5th of may. if i recall correctly there was a major change to adsense on the 5th of may 2005.

Drinko de Mayo? It's like a Mexican St. Patrick's day in some US cities: an excuse to go pub crawling with cubicle mates.

My eCPM remained within normal range. Earnings were lower, though.

Saturday May 6th is Derby Day! Kentucky Derby Day [kentuckyderby.com]!

Woo hoo! Time to go see the ponies run!

GP,

Although falling ECPM definitely s*cks, I do think that 50% of a potential $18.000,- a month still is a lotta money...

if i recall correctly there was a major change to adsense on the 5th of may 2005.

05.05.05 was a horrible, horrible day for me and quite a few others, my earnings dropped by more than 33% overnight and it took me months of experimentation to resolve the situation.

i believe there is somthing up with adsense to behave in such a manner... this same thing happened in march where it lasted about 1 week and shot back up again. It's deffinate a big drop and seems to be worse than ever right now...I'm going to have to work on site content to account for the losses and drive more traffic (ohwel when it comes back I'll be up more than before right?)

humblebeginnings,

I think a loss of 9,000$ is a problem to be honest with you because I'm hoping to be investing in the project further in which will turn heads, possibly the music industry and more.. without that extra money I'm set back a few months.

Ohwel life goes on. Time to spend some more on adwords maybe to account for my losses.

GP,

A loss of $ 9.000,- a month could be indeed a disaster. But perhaps the sun is shining again tomorrow or next week. I guess we all have had our ups and downs with Adsense before. I sure hope for you and the rest of us that ecpm will be skyrocketing again very soon...

Saturday eCPM on average, but normaly, weekend eCPM is higher than on normal week days.

Extrem low traffic, the first warm sunny weekend for outdoor activities even in the night.

It's probably the freaky weather of good sun and activies thats causing an overall decrease in value in some areas... I believe the advertisers are on "PAUSE", so lets all pray guys.. lets all worship the fact that adwords has this button and we could all be saved.

There is valueable traffic at stake and you know who will get it? that's right the lowest bidders in which results in a low Click value and low eCPM indicator tells me that from the moment the sun hit us.

Regards,
GP.

greedy player needs to remeber certain factors and I select from your last post:

It's probably the freaky weather of good sun

Not everywhere is having your weather...

so lets all pray guys.. lets all worship the fact that adwords has this button and we could all be saved.

Since when did I, or others, suddenly become "ALL" and having to pray for you? This is an individual endeavour for most of us.

from the moment the sun hit us.

Right, and again, so the weather is the same all over the world?

Think outside of your multi-Dollar box and question what else may possibly be happening...like your targeted audience having NO money to spend!

Not everywhere is having your weather...

Whilst it might not be localised weather behaviour that is causing the changes, surely there are seasonal ups and downs where traffic is concerned.

I also notice that nobody on this Adsense forum is talking about the (possible) Google SERP updates that are being discussed on other forums.

We do see much negative feedback regarding April, however there are possibly many site like yours that are actually performing quite well at the moment too. It would be interesting to see if the picture is as gloomy as many of us here paint it (myself included) when Google announces it's earings that pertain to the current period.

optirex: "Not everywhere is having your weather..."

Greedy player: im in the UK and my user base is UK.. and it appears all over the UK is sunny this last few days... so excuse me for not stating my obvious.

so maybe its just a UK thing... but also in other states its also special times for things... my thoughts are that im getting low bid ads.. or google adwords have dropped their proces game as they might do on a regular basis and people have to bid up again. (assumptions not facts)

Just got back a few hours ago from the horse track. Bet on some horses at the Kentucky Derby as well as on some of the local ponies. Decent weather. Took my kid to the paddock to get a close-up look. All in all a good day, even though I'm still recovering from a nasty flu. Now I'm running out the door for some tapas with family tonight. It's a lovely evening!

See ya'

oh yeah, and my AdSense is back to normal today...

Yesterday, (Sat 6th May), I earned less than a dollar and not a cent from my main niche subject website, which should be earning .... er significantly more.

April saw a 75% drop in earnings. Froogle, updates, sunny weather - whatever - I'm not finding this at all amusing.

My earnings are approaching an all-time high, I am astonished and delighted. May's current daily average will equal my best month ever, if only it lasts. Too soon to go shopping...

I'm in Andrea's boat. First 5 days were record breaking. Saturday was lower than normal but that was because of yet another "experiment" that should have worked in theory but didn't in reality. Keep testing those ad placements, that's all I can say.

Last month was OK, the month before was record-breaking. So goes the AdSense see-saw.

My highest eCPM (and earnings) of this month so far was on the 5th, on consistent traffic. The 6th was kinda bad, but weekends usually are for me. Notably, though, the 4th was a pretty bad paying day for me compared to usual, with a 40% drop in eCPM for that day only.

I had a terrific May 5th. Highest earnings per day ever. Probably due to cinco de Mayo related stuff on my website (main topic: history).
Saturday was a little below average due to less traffic and today is just desastrous.
I don't know, but I used to be stable on weekends and not feel any fluctuations. Lately this has changed though. I totally feel that weekends become worse and worse. Might be the weather. I don't like spring anymore.

Greedy player: im in the UK and my user base is UK.. and it appears all over the UK is sunny this last few days... so excuse me for not stating my obvious.

We all like to try and find reasons for a reduction in earnings however trying to use the weather is always a bit tame.

I'm in the UK too, it's Sunday afternoon and I have just spent the last 6 hours driving through torrential rain and the motorway was packed! So much for everyone staying in when the weather is supposedly crappy and going out when it "appears" great. Incidentally it was not wall-to-wall great weather over the UK on Saturday.

Sometimes we have to accept the obvious and that is many people just do not have the money to spend when a government has already taxed one to the hilt.

OK, so I'm generalising now however I'm sure you get my point.

It would be fantastic to have a new record month after month however the AdSense rollercoaster just ain't that smooth.

It's very tempting to judge daily AdSense earnings however it's far better to look at the medium to long term trends, and by that I mean a minimum 3 to 6 months. Some of us can do that for 3 years and before anyone says it, yes, I've been guilty of short-termism however only when there appears to be a continuing anomally.

Give it a few days and see what happens, my earnings are down right now but I'm not panicking...yet!

optirex i guess, but i still think the abnormal UK hot weather has got more people out of the house and this is why my traffic is slightly lower, where i should have new unique members which would bring delightful higher CTR to make up for this their out in the sun (in my opinion), however sunday is slowly picking back up... hopefuly monday>friday will increase.

Another theory is maybe everyone at school has finished and a niche which involves teens might die at summer, this is me out the boat for a few months.

Anyone know what day 16-18 year olds officialy broke or break up for the holidays?

I just noticed some ads from domains that are specifically on my blocked list. This could affect stats and does anyone else see this problem today? An example in my case, I have all kinds of variations of a certain large auction site filtered yet I'm seeing those stupid ads, the likes of...."get great deals on death (or whatever word) here"

Like many our eCPM was cut in half overnight on exactly May 1, from 1.74 (April 30) to 0.75 and it continues down, tonight it stands at 0.53 cents.

I simply cannot see weather, seasons and holidays effecting earnings that quickly worldwide, I believe IT HAS TO BE one of three things. 1.) Advertisers paying less or 2.) Advertisers pausing campaigns or for my conspiracy mind 3.) Google taking a larger cut.

It is also very unfortunate that we cannot all trust each other enough to disclose our "Topic" so that we can better analysis the drop (or increase) in certain sectors. Its frustrating reading about others dropping in revenue and not knowing if they are in the same general topic as you.

Maybe a separate topic but how could we work together to understand this? Actually this gives me an idea for a new site...... Wish I had more time!
