My website was down for about 24 hours. It was a miserable time for me and completely my fault.

When I finally got it up, I IM'd my wife to let her know, I was extremely happy and she knew.

Her response was "Great! I clicked some ads to make it better for you."

This, of course, killed the excitement I was feeling. I had told her months ago to not click on the ads and explained to her why. She understood. She never clicked on the ads.

She's an incredibly intelligent person. She doesn't make mistakes often and usually wins the arguments (may be the marriage factor, though).

I sent adsense an email letting them know the mistake, and hopefully they'll forgive. But, I wanted y'all to know that no matter how much you preach to family members and friends about clicking ads, it can happen.

The suggestion is what I did tonight, my site is code based, so I coded it not to show ads when she's logged in. I already had it coded not to show ads when I'm logged in, but I never thought about her or my kids. I would definately make sure friends and family DON'T see ads to click.

Can not happen to me.

All other notebooks in the family generate manipulated user agent strings containing the birth date of the owner.

My SSI script checks for those user agents and serves Amazon instead of AdSense.

Some days ago, I watched my 5 year old dougther surfing.

I thought, she was using a paint programm for children. But in the paint programm for children was a link to the homepage of the vendor.

There had been other links to other sites for children.

It would have been also possible, that she starts visiting my site, because on all notebooks is an individualized Alexa toolbar with the logo of my main site.

I would say that you will be ok as long as Google can see you as a long term and profitable investment.

I am glad that I do not have a wife. :D

However, I regretted telling my brothers about the existence of my web sites and telling how I am going to make a living since quitting my job. :C

I do not want to tell them not to click the ads at my site as I think if you tell someone not to do something they will be tempted to do the opposite. :C

From now on I better think of a way explaining to them how I make a living from the Internet. Probably tell them I am a web designer or web hoster.

That would be too harsh. Threaten her with divorce first if she ever do that again, because smarter one would threaten to click your ads if you are unfaithful to her. :D

Personally I use firefox and used the plug-in so that adsense doesnt show.

But also on my brothers machine, I've also installed/removed adsense, not to mention filtered them out with Internet Explorer.

I use i.e on my machine too and the ads come up when im testing, but I spend 95% of my time using firefox.

I had this happen too. Not with a wife, but girlfriend.
I e-mailed google imediatly and hey send me a standard answer about how I should not click my own links.

Nothing happened and I havent been kicked.

I sent adsense an email letting them know the mistake,

I'm sure it won't be a problem but i hope you gave them a convincing lie because if you told the truth, then you will be in trouble seeing as it wasn't a mistake at all but a deliberate attempt at fraud from your wife.

( that's not how i feel) , just putting myself in an uptight google worker's shoes and imagining their reaction. ;)

I walked into my computer room yesterday and saw that my cat was clicking on my adsense ads. I told the cat many times not to do that, but, you know cats, they're so darned independent

Why tell your family which sites you own at all?

Since they all have high-speed connections, I've gotten into the habit of blocking the IP addresses for the computers that my family and friends use (as well as any machines I may have used in the past to access my sites). I'd rather hear them say, "I tried to show your Web site to my friends, but got a 'Forbidden - you don't have permission to access this page' message, than hear them tell me they were clicking on all the Google ads to "help me out."

This "Forbidden" makes curious.

Better to exchange AdSene against Amazon for Your friends

You're telling me; there was a period of time some years ago when I kept getting billed for phone calls to Australia, and I spent four weeks fighting with the phone company only to find out it was my CAT doing the calling. And I only found out cause I caught her at it. Since then, she's been banned from both phone AND mouse (computer variety) privileges.

I once had a cat that would answer the phone and open doors (when she could reach the doorknob), but she never made a phone call. Luckily it was before the days of speed dialing. :)

I like the idea of showing other ads like Amazon or even my own "PSAs" when family are using the computer.

Is there any forum with suggestions on how to do this or a WordPress plugin that manages it for you (that would be way too easy).

That was just it - I was doing business with an australian company, and had them on speed dial on a speaker phone. The cat would walk across the phone, step on the speaker button, and then lie down on the australian speed dial button. Over and over.

I have a tiny Pekingese dog, her nickname is Google, she has those cute big round eyes hence the name, when she does her daily business on a newspaper we call it an algo change, if Google gets me banned on Google, there will be some major Google bu** kicking.

I had once clicked on my ad accidently :-(, I immediately informed adsense and got a mail saying to be careful in future and use adsense preview tool.
I like the policy of Vibrant Media which logs the IP address from where you check stats and any clicks made are discounted.

I guess this is your wifes way of telling she wants some attention. And it worked, didn't it?
Buy her some earrings and flowers for crying out loud!

I started this thread just to alert people to the possibility that even though you can tell friends and family not to click ads, it can happen and to code your site so that it couldn't.

There's been some great ideas, and some hilliarious comments... I should have known not to start a thread after a few drinks...

btw, she got the earrings...
