I noticed this also but when I followed the link to the What's New page there wasn't any information on it. Nor anything I could find in account settings or ad generation. Looks like someone pulled the trigger on the tip a bit too quickly. (Or, considering that it's already the 13th, G's a tad late in rolling this out for this season.)

You can edit the setting in My Account>Ad Type Preference

Personally I wasnt very impressed I thought they could have done more than just faded background images.

This goes back at least to Halloween. JenStar reports on the Halloween-themed ads in her blog. I guess they are just rolling it out quietly. I would want to see the Christmas "look" before turning this on. Might not work on my site at all.

Haven't seen this yet. Anyone know if this is an account-wide on-off switch or do you have to set it in the ad code like the size, color etc.? Freq---

it is a site-wide switch, but you can disable it at any time (i am sure there will be lags between toggling the switch and seeing actual results on your pages). since we have seen these ads in beta, google has some figures on them. i am sure they help CTR in some instances, otherwise google wouldn't release these for wide release.

I enabled them as soon as I found out how to enable them, about 20 minutes ago. Still haven't seen any appear.

Freq: you can see samples here: https://www.google.com/adsense/adformats?hl=en_us#themed i wonder if these will be added to link units too.

Seems kind of late to implement these. There is less than 2 weeks before Christmas. Will they stop automatically after the 25th?

They're not just for Christmas. Presumably the Christmas ones will stop. Perhaps the next will be New Years? Or Valentine's Day?

I wonder how the graphics of the themed ads will blend in with the colors of the site. I mean there are only 3 different colored graphics for the search box. Black, Grey, White. How will they blend in the graphics?

My guess is that the themed units will NOT blend with the site at all. When they are available they will run a standard color combo based on the theme of the unit. I'm still going to let them run. Freq---

egypty, I assume it's like other changes you make on the AdSense site. They take a while to show up. Just wait and see. I'd expect a delay of at least a few hours. And then, all of a sudden, all your ads will be red and green! (or whatever it is)

I find it very amusing that, while you can't advertise guns, the example for themed ads includes a rifle scope.

| You can enable or disable themed ad units on an account-wide basis... |
| One size fits some. This seems to combine the idea many webmasters have implemented, with Google's approval, of positioning small images (other than arrows/pointers/etc.) next to ad blocks to draw attention (but apparently not undue attention) to the ads. Now Google will add the images for you. Unfortunately, the theme gimmick would only work on one of my sites, so I would need to control the feature by site or by channel. What would be interesting to me is if Google implemented a means of selecting from a collection of pre-approved graphics, or having them contextually match graphics to ads, thereby making this a lot more customizable. And, of course, let you control the appearance at least on a site-by-site basis. A computer site could pick a computer theme for the graphics, otherwise blend the ad unit, and Google would present "approved" images in the background.

A few years ago Christmas used to start in late August (yes, I genuinely did see a christmas tree in a shop before the start of September). But starting the decorations 2 weeks before Christmas still seems too early to me. (PS: I was ROFLMAO at your soda bottle comment in t'other thread. Quality wit, t'was :-))

NEW We've added seasonal spirit to your ad units - during holidays and special events, your ads will now display themed colors and graphics where appropriate. Visit your Ad Type Preferences page to disable themed ads. still getting tips without seeing the real code fore themes

Considering I found the ads that overlapped those faded background images harder to read, I'm leaving the themes off as I'm advertising to make money, not look cutesy and give readers eye strain to figure out what the ads are saying. BAH! HUMBUG!

When do they decide to put themes up? 1 week before a holiday? 2 weeks? The same time that google changes their own logo? And do they come down as soon as the holiday is over or within a couple of days? It would have been nice to know that.... Jennifer
