PHP printing under Linux

Under Windows OS I can get PHP to send a printer_open() command and send some data to a printer. Can this be done under Linux?

No, you can't, unless you want to write the Linux printing library yourself.

*nix doesn't have a unified printing system - PHP printing functions are Win-only per the manual:
