It saves Doerr because he once pledged that his other investment, into the Segway scooter, would be the fastest company to reach $1 billion in sales. These days, that's looking less likely. With Google, it's easier to forget that episode.

Lesson for Doerr: Dont ever underestimate the diffculty involed in changing people's behaviour ...

The biggest winner in this deal after the founders and Schmidt is Ram Shriram - WOW , a mere 300k investment in 1998 is 600 million now ...

1 billion in Sales mean , adwords accounts , froogle etc. .. or is the revenue generated from advertisements?

Total Revenue including advertisement , licensing fees and hardware sales (google in a box) even though advertisement (adwords +adsense) constitute more than 90% of the total according to the SEC filing

I've seen presentations by Siebel and BEA Systems which claim the 1 billion record too. :)
