Floats and Clears

I'm relatively new to CSS and I'm starting to use it in everything I design now. The only thing I guess I'm having difficulty with is positioning, floats, and clears. I pretty much have positioning ok, but I've seen a lot of topics about floats and clears and I have no idea what they do or when they are used.

Can anyone point me to some good tutorials about the uses and functionality of floats and clears?
