CSS equivalet to HTML <td> valign attribute?

Hi, I need to recreate

<td valign="middle">Foo</td>
But using CSS, I've searched but not found exactly what I need... surely this is a very basic thing?

I put:
text-align: middle;

But alas that doesn't seem right... I've never used CSS much before, so I need help :)

Have a look at this link [wpdfd.com] (underneath the advert) which has a good explanation of vertical centering using CSS and a workaround for Opera too...
