I'm having problem trying to set height in CSS to take up the remaining space like that in table. Can anyone help me with this simple problem?

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html><head><title>Untitled</title></head><body>
<table summary="" border=1 cellspacing=2 width=300>
<tr><td width=200 valign=top><p>Je suis ofann su champignon. Beseastais aime, ofotre tipené ip iismuche erumentette. Jaune tome ico marchez pingouin. Gris ennid oso em nezess or. <td valign=top ><p>Odibus suras, lupr upesces se bropeci atoscat. <b>Height utilitized occuping remaining space.</b></p></td></tr></table>
<br><br>
<div style="width:300px;border: 1px solid #a0a0a0;padding:2px;">
<div style="width:198px;border: 1px solid #a0a0a0;float:left;">

<div style="width:96px;border:1px solid #a0a0a0;float:left;margin: 0 0 0 2px;">
<p>I want height to utilize remaining space matching the first column like in table.</p>
</div></div></body></html>

www.****.com/articles/footers/

replace the stars with "a list apart", it is a great article about vertical positioning in CSS.

Does anyone know why webmasterworld is replacing that address with stars? Is there some kind of ban?

A big part of the conversion from tables to css is in the designer rather than the design. A shelf built with wood and nails is put together differently than one of metal, glass, and screws.

While it's possible to imitate most any table layout with css, it ain't always easy. I think the transition to css is an ideal time to go for a new design -- one that takes advantage of the materials.

Sorry to get all zen ;)
