Try dumping the really general terms and stick with targeted phrases.
Be sure to use the negative keyword feature to block words which indicate the searcher has something else in mind besides your product.
Example: Suppose you sell tools and were bidding on the term "hammer". There's no point showing your ad to someone search for "lyrics to song If I Had a Hammer". "Lyrics" is a word I *always* put in my negative keyword list.
Play with Google's suggestion tool and watch for words to block as well as to bid on. It will be time well spent.

Here's my logic, FWIW....
I am willing to pay up to the cost of a stamp.
I figure Adwords is a good deal. Based on the way I use it (on and off) I receive about 10K impressions per month. Out of that I get a couple hundred clicks, with an overall average CPC usally less than the .35 I have it set for right now.
If I send out a 10,000 piece bulk mailing to some kind of "somewhat qualified" customer list, it would cost me about $3700 just for the postage - not to mention the ad piece, addressing, etc. I fiddle around with my Adwords account so I usually don't spend more than $60 a month, which is all I can afford considering I am promoting a company that belongs to my Sister and Brother in law, and I am doing it to try to improve the quality of life for them and their kids. I would never really **** about what I have to pay for this service, but if I set what I am willing to pay too high to gain a notch or two in position, I won't be able to afford any clicks on my meager budget. I would rather stay back at #4 or #5 and save some money.
Of course I'll join the club of people bitching about the system performance the last couple of weeks. Both my impressions and CTR have taken a dumper, and I didn't change anything.

I agree with the rest, but why 'www'?
A lot of people seem to search for terms like 'com' and 'www' when they are looking for a brand name and I wouldn't personally have excluded it. Just wondering if you know something I don't ;)

Usually if someone is searching for www or com, they are looking for a specific site or browsing for information. They tend to fall into two categories:
1) link:www.... I don't want to advertise to competitors that use generic names when they are simply checking their backlinks. CTR plummets.
2) www....com These people know where they want to be. But lots of people type the web address into the search engines rather than the address bar. I know they should, but they don't. If your listed in the free results and they type in your full domain name (because that is where they want to be) you will be listed top.

I did an informal study with one domain that got around 2000 hits/month for people searching for www.theirdomin.com.
When we added an adword for the domain name, they got around 1700 free hits and 600 paid hits per month. They did end up paying for some hits that would be otherwise be free, but also ended up with more of the total traffic searching for their domain.
I also think you need to take into consideration if others are bidding on your domain when you decide to add a domain to your kw list.

Fair point. I was thinking in affiliate mode instead of site-owner who is already top of the SERPS for www.widget.com mode.
I still stick by the fact that there is a third case and users search for things like 'www widgetchat' when they aren't looking for a specific site but rather an online chat about widgets (as opposed to one of the many offline chats on the internet?!?).
The 'www' possibly relates to the area of a directory. I know a lot of sites have an area in their directories called 'www' (the ODP for example) and it's possible that users pick up on that and start entering it as an additional search term in the same way they might use 'online'.

At one site (example.com) I see at least one sale a day for www.example.com as the search term. I wonder if people have found that searching for the domain name is as good as typing it in the URL field?
I noticed that many search for the brand name and once I started advertising it as a keyword, I have noticed a small increase in visits through the ad.
To answer the OP's question - I can't get many 5c clicks that convert in a competitive niche - I have one that brings in a few 000 impressions each day in content matching (I suspect it is a keyword covering disparate topics) but not a single click. I let it run because it costs nothing and might convert one day. I had other 5c terms that brought in just as many eyeballs but also a few clicks and negligible conversions, so I had to kill those.
You really need some clicks at the going rate to gain enough customers and have some speculative ad budget to test new terms.

There are also some sites that don't appear if you search with or without the www. first.
Those sites (besides needing to fix those issues), should advertise on their domain name as people will get an error message, think they typed it in wrong, and then search for the URL.

I was playing around with some adwords affiliate stuff and I had huge conversion ratios by bidding on "www competitor com" type searches - the only brand name I didn't bid on was the one I was aff'ing for - in this niche it doesn't work.
