Google ToolBar for Mac
Anyone think it is time for the software?

I don't know about anyone else, but I hate using Virtual PC just to use my Google ToolBar!

As a full time web developer and learning the game of SEO, I would like to see Google ToolBar come over to the Mac side. (Mac OS X that is.)

Any Mac heads out there agree?

If so - I motion to add a little pressure on Google and let them know what we need, and need it sooner than later.

I made it easy for you... just e-mail them here: toolbar-support@google.com.

:) Cheers!

I agree 100%...this missing feature is forcing me to use windoze *way* more than I want to.

"C'mon Google!

It's not like mac is some obscure OS that will vanish..and think of all the goodwill (and marketshare) you can garner. Beside all that, not supplying a mac version is just rude.

I was told by a few people that MS didnt make the SDK available or purely limited so there wasnt anything to work off of.

Hey all,

Did a lot of digging around in OS X applications and I came up with 2 developers who played with the Google idea.

1.) GoogleX [homepage.mac.com]

2.) Shadow Google [homepage.mac.com]

Now I e-mailed both of them and encouraged them to take their development one step further in perhaps creating a X version of Google ToolBar. Perhaps you all could do the same eh? I mean if Google can't move on this, then someone should I think!?

Heck thinking about it, if I knew application development I would have a version to sell to Google, then I could retire he he :)

Okay just some thoughts and info.
Peace!

Count this as a vote for a Mac version of the toolbar.

I emailed google a few weeks ago about a mac google toolbar.
I got a reply saying that a mac toolbar was in development for the netscape browser.

I dont know when it will be released, if ever!!!!!

Hey there People!

Here is the reply I got from one of the developers.

<sniped>

These guys are great!
If Google is not careful this company will release toolbar before them! :) I got this e-mail back from the company who makes Shadow Google.

I'm a Mac user, and kind of new to all the SEO stuff. I was annoyed (but not entirely surprised) when I recently found there was no Mac version of the toolbar. In fact, I just dug out my old IBM laptop last night and set it up just to download the toolbar! Hopefully there will be a Mac option soon - but not only for X, please!

I have e-mailed Google over the past two years (? ), ever since the toolbar first came out. I have always been getting the same reply, that is maybe we will do it, sort of, thinking about it, etc etc.

That is I do not think they will ever do it. Which is my only annoyance (and it is pretty big, let me tell you) with Google.

Yep, my hand's in the air too!

I'm also having to use an old PC laptop for any PageRank related research. Which isn't always a bad thing, as I think there IS too much emphasis on PR ... but some checking is necessary, and its a pain not to have the toolbar on your main machine.

I already offered free pizza and beer if they'd do the same for Linux, so far they haven't taken me up on it.

Of course they haven't. They're Californians.

You need to offer 'em free burritos and beer. ;)

I'm with you on this one. Google needs to get with the program and realize there more than just a few Mac users out there and the numbers continue to grow. I just put an old copy of softwindoz 98 on my Mac and had to download IE6 to use the toolbar, but something is not working right with the browser and it's sooooooo slow. I hate the thought of having to buy a cheap PC just to have the toolbar available, but I can't keep asking friends to check PR for me either.

Absolutely! A Mac OSX version of Google's toolbar would be a great thing - I'd even pay (OK - a small amount) for it....

As a quick fix couldn't Google make the toolbar a 30px top frame of a frameset so that the need to port it to other OSs can be avoided? A location bar could be part of it. Then have pages in the main frame?

Maybe a possible project for one of you whizzes out there ;)

You'll all know that the Google Directory lists PR of sites in each category.

I would love a toolbar for the mac.. it's frustrating not being able to check PR at work and having to wait till I'm home to check it!

Another thing I think should be available is PR listing in the 'cached' version of a page.. this way it would be completely OS independent and just a standard html fix like the directory results.. And considering they show PR in the directory results.. why don't they show it in the regular search results?

At the very least it would be nice to have a tool like PR:www.website.com.. could be an exact PR too then, not one of those rounded down ones!

C'mon google.. so many options.. not enough answers for the non-windows flock!

I realized that complaining here probably wouldn't do much good (?), so I followed jimbo_mac's lead and emailed Google. They do send back an automated reply saying that if you're looking for a Macintosh version, please know they're looking into it, blah blah. It looks like jimbo_mac sent his email back in July and it said the same thing.

Maybe if we all start bugging Google enough together, we'll get a real response? ;) Who knows...

Yay! It's here finally- and its integrated into apple's new browser, Safari. Yep, it's pretty nice, doesn't have all the features of the win google toolbar, just the recent searches dropdown menu. Safari is pretty cool, tho it could use a few more features like tabs, maybe we'll see that happen in the final version. The beta was released the other day- you can get it at apple's site. I can't wait to see the day that macs come shipped with the company's own browser instead of microsucks internet explorer.

Cripes, this is frustrating.

I've been all over this site trying to figure out how to do this on a Mac. I've found what looks like the magic code but it seems to be just impossible to find the ch value for a particular domain without using a PC. Even the posts in the Mac Webmaster forum about how to sniff it out, require a PC program.

Has anyone come up with a way to get this elusive number without buying a new bloody computer?

I have just added to a post in the Apple discussion for Safari (discussions.info.apple.com) requesting this addition.. would be nice if more mac based PR interested people posted in that forum - maybe with the next upgrade of Safari they will include it, who knows?

Me too! Me too!
I'm moving away from Doze at home and office.
If only they could make something work in Opera - now that would be a treat, cross platform browser, cross platform toolbar?

I'm sure Google are watching this thread so keep it active! We might actually get a response...

I think daamsie is right-- adding to the thread at the Apple support site can't hurt. They already have a relationship with Google, so they can probably get access to the relevant Super Secret Codes--and Apple seems to have just a tad more of an interest in Mac users than Google does, as evidenced by the canned "we're working on it" replies that people have been getting from Google for YEARS. To Apple, we're their bread and butter; to Google we're a little jar of some kind of weird marmalade, nice to have but certainly not necessary.
