Interesting Google Story

[wral.com...]

The Google search was the latest in recently discovered evidence found in the 100 million pages of content removed from computers.

Robert Petrick searched for the words "neck," "snap," "break" and "hold"

I never knew that keywords that we search for on Google are kept in seperate files on our computer.

anyone know where these files are located? seems like privacy invasion to me.

Not kept on separate files. I could go to someone's computer right now and find out what they've been researching simply by looking at the auto fill-in for the Google toolbar search or even the web page based search. That's before I even start looking at cached pages on someone's computer.

The information is saved on your computer - you can't invade your own privacy. The police can however access it by looking at your computer, presumably after getting a search warrant.

You can manually clear your cache or most browsers will give you a setting option to not save history information.

It's your choice how much information you keep on your system.

Also, some toolbars & other programs do send back search information to the search engine. If privacy is a concern for you always read the privacy policy before signing up for any service.

You can manually clear your cache or most browsers will give you a setting option to not save history information.

Which will get you precisely nowhere as all of the information is still stored ..you have merely repointed the shortcut ( known as the history button on your gui) to another sector of the disc ..

The actual information is still there ( and thats not including what is sitting in your swap files ) just you told the button to "forget" where it put it ..

Such programs as advertise themselves as "internet tracks removers" etc ..whatever their names are will also leave so much stuff around that you would not need even the most basic forensics to find the traces ..

This applies to all the major browsers on 'doze ..

IE is the worst ( easiest to get at what it knows ..and it's in more than one place ) ..windows of any flavour keeps user information and data all over the place ..most users don't even get to see the files 'cos all 'doze ships with hide certain sys files switched on by default ..and hides file extensions ..

And unless you have the right stuff installed ..even when you find theses files you cannot see inside them from a running 'doze 'cos it returns " the file is inaccessible because it is being used by the system "

oh yeah and there's "cluster tips" ..the little bits in a file system that dont get rewritten by the next file som they keep the last remnants of the previous on in just a few bytes ..

Even reformatting HD will not erase all data ..

hmmm..how bout something like this from mcafee :

Mcafee QuickClean

Product Benefits
Revitalizes and optimizes PC performance by quickly scanning and removing unneeded files, programs and folders, increasing valuable disk space.

Permanently erases sensitive personal and financial files using McAfee® Shredder’s secure file erasing features.

Proprietary McAfee uninstaller technology frees you from the time-consuming manual process of file and program removal.

Targets specific ‘clutter’ on your PC by using custom search criteria such as file age, folder location, or file size.

Advanced privacy controls helps remove confidential information, including your surfing habits and history of files recently accessed by popular Windows® office automation programs, such as Microsoft® Word or Excel.

Application Remnant Cleaner (ARC) removes all associated files and folders, locating them wherever they're hiding.

Extensive e-mail cleanup support including Microsoft® Outlook®, Microsoft® Outlook Express®, and other MAPI-compliant e-mail programs.

Auto-updates run silently in the background, ensuring you’re always protected from evolving and emerging security threats.

i've got nothing to hide myself, i just dont think its cool that we cant erase this type of data from our pc's. Especially considering all these new highly sophisticated software programs out there that are suppose to erase everything.

Please dont link out to crap that wont do what it says it can :)

( Brett ...you could always unlink these before the easily impressionable get to thinking these things work cos they were listed here? )

..and as for macafee being anything other than hype and a nice landing page and box ...

RAOTFALOL ..

( if I didn't have to keep going back into boxes that were running this junk and removing all the nasties ..and finding all the PRON sites that the owner thought they had erased from the BOX )..

Number of times I've heard " get rid of it before the wife or GF or ..occasionally BF sees it" ..followed by "but I only went there because" ... and and "afterwards I downloaded" ( choose your crap.. app ..usually from the sort of links above et al )..

And sometimes I just say I removed "it "and then talk to the people who are there to protect our kids..

So ..any programmer .or hacker :) will tell you ( less 'n' they are trying to sell you something ..like a "crap app ")..

You leave tracks!..

and thats not even going near the issues of what your ISP keeps about you ..

The only HD that doesnt tell tales is a burned and crushed HD ..

well almost ..but we arent going to do a how to here cos this is one place where I do respect the TOS..sail close to the edges sometimes ..;)) but do respect it ..heaven judges one on how one is to cats on earth ..even for us atheists ..;))

Got it ..~~:)
