Hello! First off, I am a developer and know nothing about SEO. I have some books, but when I keep hearing about designing a web site for search engines, do they mean what type of content is in it and how to get the right keywords for your site. Are there any online tools that will do the keyword part?

Hi macrost,
You've definitely found the right place to learn about SEO. Read, read, and read the posts in these extensive forums and you will begin to get a picture of what it takes to design a search engine friendly site.
For keywords try wordtracker. You can also use Overture's keyword tool:

Cheers! :)
