Number of keywords is irrelevant .. Number of characters including spaces is .. Like titles .. after that .. Depends on the search engine you want to smooch ;) Between 63 and 70 per title usually does it for most of the dancers.. Any dancer that listens to the endearments of keywords alone is easily distracted and not worth dancing with. When was the last time anyone took altavista for a waltz?

Ok, let's say I want to smooch google and if I'm trying to sell widgets, if my keywords in the meta tag are: blue widgets, green widgets, yellow widets, widgets with brass handles, widgets made from stone will that be ok?

Amy, I wouldn't obsess over the keyword tag. Put in the keywords that make sense for the page, and forget about it. The impact on rankings for the major engines is somewhere between microscopic and non-existent. I still include appropriate keyword tags, but mainly for specialty crawlers like site search tools that may still use it.
