Also my density is pretty high but is necessary for certain reasons. However I had added more 'normal' copy and am trying to retain my density. I have added some images too so I have included more keywords in the alt tags. Does google weigh normal copy keywords the same as those in the Alt tags?

Just as they do for anchor text, headers, etc. You don't need to be concerned about being penalized for high keyword density, unless you're using spam techniques (hidden text, et.) Use your keyword phrases as often as you can, but always keep your user in mind. If you do that, you should be fine. Good luck.
