great chart, so who gets the job of updating it
Nice chart Brett! Will you be keeping it current?
I'm still getting Espotting for BTLooksmart...
When I interviewed Paul G of Teoma [webmasterworld.com] he confirmed that DH would continue to be used. Most of us have seen a drop off in DH generated referrals, but they are still there. The biggest is from MSN, but an occasional HotBot and Teoma view from a DH influence still comes through.
Also, Don't forget the new Ask Jevees/Teoma deal with Google.
That's what I hate about these charts. You can't keep them up to date for two seconds ;).
Thanks for the round up Brett.
|Also, Don't forget the new Ask Jevees/Teoma deal with Google. |
From the chart
|8 AskJeeves has completed a deal with Google to install Google AdWords on AskJeeves and Teoma as sponsored links. |
Removed: Go.com, Excite, and WebCrawler are now basic search affiliate sites of several search services (mainly Overture).
Nice one Brett,
I still like to use northernlight.com once in a while.
Great chart - thanks Brett
It would be great if it could be kept up to date.
e.g. to have a 'last update' date on it somewhere.
Great work. Now what would be useful is going through each search service and estimating what % of results are delivered by each source provider. Then we could create a chart that showed what % of total traffic each source provider actually provided.
Very useful reference as it stands though.
My girlfriend will be pleased - shes started helping us out after finishing uni and her first task was to make a chart just like that, guess I'll have to think of a new job now!
Are there instructions for how to use this chart? For example, I get many, many visitors from MSN searches, almost none from AOL searches. But both MSN and AOL get their results from Inktomi, as I read the chart. So how can that be? (I have not paid to be included anywhere.)
Agreed misosoph. Every engine is different in that regard. While AOL leads primarily with Inktomi results, MSN lead primarily with LookSmart results. Trying to work that in to a chart would be messy.
Couple of comments that people made:

We actually did that some months ago, based on aggregating logs on every client - we made the columns on our Excel spreadsheet relate to the % marketshare and even colour coded the whole thing. It took AGES. Then Yahoo started using Espotting... in UK.. Then Excite went down... Then the BBC started to use search. Now our table is totally out of date!

Yep - they have a deal at the moment - Looksmart are mixing Espotting results in with their directory ones. Wonder how long that will last now Looksmart has bidsmart.looksmart.co.uk?
>I'm still getting Espotting for BTLooksmart...
Which part of the results is Espotting?
We must be seeing different results.
When I search on the common "mortage" on both, I don't see anything at all that matches under "featured sites".
Updated with a few more with help from Mr. Rencke.
Ok, backus sent me a search that did turn up Espotting links. Thanks
I flagged this one. Excellent chart. Thanks for making that. I thought it was a nice touch adding in some of the principle European engines.
It is getting so hard to explain this stuff to those unfamilier with search engines. And at times, I get confused anymore.
Now the real work begins, having to update it every other month! ;)
Great chart Brett...thanks for sharing with all of us. I am sure that it will come in handy as a reference tool.
When has Brett not kept something updated here? ;)
Thank you Brett.
Awesome. Even easier to read and interpret.
Nice! Very usable and easy to follow.
Nice One Brett!
good stuff, Brett.
Nice to see the ODP holding strong in the Directory feeds.
Google just seems to be going from strength to strength, not sure how i feel about this.
Thank you Brett!
You really are a master at providing great tools all of us need!
Neat stuff, Brett! Gotta print that out and put it by my computer. :)
However, wouldn't Looksmart in some way be influenced by Zeal? (Zeal is mentioned wrt WiseNut)
people love charts...
