Is it better to linkup with sites that provide the same nature products and services you provide? Or, will it hurt your ranking by just linking up with sites that have good traffic but totally differ from what your service is?

Is emailing for link population considered spamming? Any other ideas on increasing link population?

Start reading up in WebmasterWorld's Reciprocal Linkage Topics [webmasterworld.com]. There are some enormously useful and insightful topics and discussions in this forum that will undoubtedly help you.

If you can find site within your keyword and business market that will link to you, that are quality sites, than this is better than obtaining links from non-relevant sites.
