Panther Slow Down

 8:40 pm on Dec 4, 2003 (gmt 0)

Anyone else notice a slow down after installing Panther?

I'm on a G4 Dual 500MHz, 1.5 GB SDRAM, updated to 10.3.1 and I get the rainbow spinner alot now, especially with Safari. I use a browser alot and I run MS Entourage in the background.

Flash MX 2004 Pro has a problem too but that seems a bit better after I ran the Macromedia update.

Did you try a clean install, or did you install over 10.2.x?

You might the former makes this a lot faster.... but don't forget to back up all your files elsewhere.....!

Yup I was afraid of that. I did an upgrade. I guess it's time for a clean install.

I also did the "upgrade" on top of Jag... that lasted for about a week (it wasn't slow persay, but definately not up to the performance I thought it should have been). Redid it with a clean install and have been running pretty smooth since.

Though it was a bit of a pain to have to redo my local dev environment, looking back comapred to the upgrade, the clean install was definately worth it.

I guess you take a chance with an upgrade. One colleague had some problems with external drives when he upgraded to Panther; lost data.

I will definitely schedule a clean install for the New Year. Thanks.
