phpbb is one that many here use. It is free, can be made Googlebot-friendly, and you can download it at phpbb.com

Check with your hosting company too, a lot of them offer a feature to automatically install free scripts for you, ready to use.

Speaking of BBS, when is bestbbs.com going to become available?

There is a huge amount of work that has to go on between having something that works in the controlled confines of your own servers, and something that is easily distributable, supportable etc. etc.
I have a number of personal projects that I would love to release (either as free software or commercially) but they would need so much cleaning up, and i'm also slightly nervous of gaping security holes being discovered.
Either way - I know another massive forum (65K+ members, nothing to do with Web / Internet) that could use an efficient BBS....

one day bestbbs will be out but not free from whats been discussed.
phpbb is nice, i use it, but make sure you follow their message board and follow the security notices and update your script when new versions are out.
I thought this message was about the oldskule bbs' like dialup back in the day ;)

bite yer tongue! hehehe... i still operate my "oldskule bbs" that's been in operation for 15+ years... it even has telnet access ;) yup, ASCII/ANSI textual displays, hundreds of networked message areas and hundreds of files areas with thousands of files... some that can't be found any more, even... oh yes, and something that's rarely seen these days... door games! hehehe...
