What do you hate about the web?

Place to gripe and rant about web surfing, web sites, and Internet in general, all for a constructive purpose.

My top peeves:

1) Pop ups. I didn't ask for your ad in my face. Bu-bye....

2) Email spam. If you think I am going to buy anything from you after spamming me, you're dumber than I think you are.

3) Slow loading pages. I don't want your flash, I don't want your javascript, I want your info if you have any

4) Horizontal scrolling, major turn-off....

5) The people who do purchase through spam and make it worthwhile for these spammers.

any java, I hate having to wait for someone's page to load because they have a java ticker or some other useless code.

unoptimized wysiwyg code from any editor. hundreds and hundreds of lines of code making a heavy page to show a couple of images and a few paragraphs of text.

broken sites, I don't care what browser I am using I want to be able to read the content, if not, i probably won't let the page finish loading.

flash, most times, especially when it doesn't have a skip button. no skip, no sale, see ya.

pretty much any useless code or elements. I can just hear people saying "this is really neat, this will make more people use my site". Except load time slows down or it doesn't work properly and oops, I'm gone.

I sound like a bitter impatient surfer. oh well.

After some of the pages I've seen, I think this is a GOOD thing. :)

Visual Cliches:

Photos of people photographed from above, so that the model is looking up at you.

Another one is the blatant emulation of Apple's GUI. You know, the gum drop buttons and the gray and white tiling.

Any other visual cliches out there?

In devil's advocate mode:

People who argue for quicker download times and then add irrelevant XHTML- and CSS-compliant buttons...

SEO and CSS "new minimalism" being used as an excuse for lack of visual interest...

ODP and Yahoo lookalikes...

Webmasters who hide their reciprocal links in "invisible" frames or otherwise try to diminish outgoing PR...

I hate the people who can't build the content on their own site so they decide to steal mine instead.

On a more positive note, I hate the fact that I have become aquainted with a lot of great people on the Internet that I will never get a chance to meet in person.

In the "OH, but I digress" category,

Regarding that tiny little camera,
PC World/Magazine just did a roundup of those cameras, rating them under optimum light and sub-optimum light, and I have to say the article was quite enlightening.

No names as to which camera kind of didn't make the grade.

1. email spam
2. the people that send it

I am reminded daily how stupid most of these spammers are, especially the zipperheads with their sad story extortion money requests. Do these people have half a braincell in their head? They aren't even good at being slimeballs.

Hate:

Pop-ups, especially sneaky spawning popups.

Websites that resize windows or change the way my browser operates.

Sites that try to initiate automatic downloads.

Email spammers.

What does email spam has to do with the Web?

The web is one internet protocol and email is another. The fact that spammers crop some email adresses on the web is the only relation I see.

Did "the Web" replaced Internet in most human minds already?

>What does email spam has to do with the Web?

My bad.

I really meant I hate spammers that collect my email addresses from my web sites and then fill my inbox with all sorts of nasty spam. This makes people reluctant to use email to contact webmasters about their websitesand also makes webmasters reluctant to use email on their websites for contact purposes. The practice has devalued both email and the experience of the web for everyone.

I also hate spam in guestbooks.

Filling out a lengthy, privacy intrusive "Add URL" form, finally hitting the submit button only to get a scripting error page!

The fact that everyone who bought a computer now feels they have the know-how to run a business, and assumes their pushy behavior is appropriate.
