Using FTP upload with firewall installed.
Can I upload to host without turning off firewall?

 12:38 am on May 16, 2004 (gmt 0)

I run a web site and when I attempt to upload (FTP) pages or amendments to my hosting service's server, the Sygate personal firewall won't let me do so unless I select the "Allow All" option. It makes me nervous to have the firewall turned off while I am amending my site. I have looked at the information about how to configure the firewall without any luck ..... Have I missed some setting which will permit me to upload to my hosting service without resorting to the "Allow All" option?

Make sure your ftp software is running in 'passive mode'. This means all the ftp connections are initiated by you, and so should pass through the firewall just fine.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it next time I update my site.
