"_vti" folders - What are they good for?

When I connect to my site's FTP server through Dreamweaver there are a number of "_vti" folders (_vti_bin, _vti_cnf, _vti_txt, etc.) in my main directory. I know Dreamweaver made them, but don't know why. Does anyone know their purpose, or if they're even needed for that matter? Thanks.

Those are FrontPage Extensions installed server-side to provide FrontPage support for the account. I you're not using FrontPage, you should be able to remove them without affecting anything else.
