Discussion web posting no text!
Discussion web posting no text

 11:54 am on Nov 4, 2002 (gmt 0)

Can anyone help? I've taken over the company Intranet and one of the authors has a section with a discussion forum built using Front Page.

I upgraded the server extensions on the Web Server from FP 98 to FP 2000 and now the web forum doesn't post the text on the forms submitted.

Any clues as to how I can go about fixing this? I can't see any issue with the WEBBOT code but I don't know where else to look!

Hello Zarla, and Welcome to Webmasterworld [webmasterworld.com]

Any chance you can tell us what operating system and server you're using?

It seems that the webbots are not working, sometimes it depends on the server or operating system from what I've read....these frontpage extensions are unique beasts ;)

Using IIS 4.0 on Windows NT 4.0 - does that give any further clues? Cheers

I checked out Microsoft [support.microsoft.com], that and a few nearby pages seem to hone in on step by step installation etc.

MS have loads of support pages, hopefully that might help if no one else has came across the same thing.

You might want to make a backup copy of the website and fiddle around with some settings if the step by step installation falls through ;)

Thanks for that - these were the instructions that I followed! I think the original discussion forum was created with F98 and I tried recreating the forum with FP2000 and comparing code.

FP98 has 2 pages
I pages has all messages posted using
<!--webbot bot="FormInsertHere"
DESCR="The FrontPage FormInsertHere Component indicates the point in an HTML file where you want a default, Registration, or Discussion Component to insert new results."

2nd pages is submit page
<form METHOD="POST" action="--WEBBOT-SELF--">
<!--webbot bot="SaveResults" startspan U-File="xxxx.htm" S-Format="HTML/BR"
S-Label-Fields="FALSE" B-Reverse-Chronology="TRUE"
S-Builtin-Fields="Date Time" U-Confirmation-Url="Larner.htm" --><input TYPE="hidden" NAME="VTI-GROUP" VALUE="0"><!--webbot
bot="SaveResults" endspan --><blockquote>
<div align="center"><center><table cellpadding="2">
<td bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center"><center><p><font face="Arial" color="#000080"><strong>Please
type your message below - press return when you get to the edge of the box:</strong></font></td>
<tr align="center">
<td bgcolor="#FF0000"><strong><font face="Arial" color="#000080"><div align="center"><center><p></font><font face="Arial" color="#FFFFFF">REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE END OF THE MESSAGE</font></strong></td>
<tr align="center">
<td><div align="center"><center><p>&nbsp;<textarea NAME="what" ROWS="9" COLS="56"></textarea>
<tr align="center">
<td bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center"><center><p><input TYPE="submit" VALUE="POST THIS MESSAGE">
<input TYPE="reset" VALUE="CLEAR"></td>

In the forum created with FP 2000 there are 4 pages and utilises
<!--webbot bot="Include" tag="BODY" u-include="" -->

Does this give any extra clues cos I'm still stuck!

Hello again Zarla,

Since you checked out the installation and the FP components are not working - may I suggest you stop using them? :)

As an alternative you could use a middleware language like ASP or PHP, as handy as the FP extensions are, they don't have the integrity of PHP or ASP for things like form posts.

You might want to check where your form is pointing to, the names of the form fields and see if any of them are making it to their destination. Also, when using FP, I found that re-building a page from scratch containing FP components sometimes got the FP extesnion ghouls out of it ;)

Since youre using FP 00, try making a form with your name as the field and post it to a "confirmation page" made by FP that prints your name out. If it prints your name out from the form post then it shouldnt be an extension problem, more to do with the older pages.

thanking you for your advice! the pages are being rebuilt as we speak!
