[newsfactor.com...]

A Brazilian programmer has made the source code for the Cabir mobile phone virus available online, prompting fears that new, more virulent generations of the malware could be released into the wild. The virus infects phones using the Symbian operating system.

The release of Cabir code is of concern in the security community, according to Mikko Hypponen, security researcher at F-Secure.

"Now that the code is out, anyone interested in creating viruses can develop more variants," he told NewsFactor. "This could be a big headache for antivirus companies."

What do you suppose was the motivation for releasing the code?

Motivation? We don't need no stinking motivation! :)

Why would anybody dabble with viruses? Because their child-like sense of wonder is tickled by the thought that "I did that", and compared to their excruciatingly boring life, dispensing destruction helps them to feel like they have "done" something ... in the same way someone who drops rocks onto cars from an overpass feel they are "doing" something.

There's no reason for anyone to write/modify viruses except for selfish reasons, for which one hardly needs motivating.
