Copyright protection for downloadable map pages?
Guidelines for downloadable copyrighted material.

Hi, I'm working on a new site for a company that creates and sells local mapbooks (100+ page full streetguides). The customer would like to place gif's of every page on the site... how can we word a statement to allow personal downloading or printing of the pages without eroding their copyright?

Downloading for personal use is likely "fair use" in any event, so I would just use the standard copyright blurb.

Of course, I am not a lawyer, and you would do well to ask one.

My thanks, I can see so much we could do with the maps, but I don't want to ruin the customer's only livelihood. I would feel better if we bit the bullet & asked a lawyer. (A cheap lawyer if there is such a thing who is still competent)!

You could always put a watermark on the images such that they are still usable, tey readily identifiable as coming from your client's site.

Visit [builder.cnet.com...] they have a variety of legal stuff.

Perfect! I can also use/modify the examples for the free graphics pages I'm adding elsewhere. Forgive me, but I have to sign off for the evening - my time zone is far out west. I'll catch up in the A.M. Thank you!

Marshall - That's a handy link... thanks.

You're welcome. My problem is remembering which of my eight browsers I bookmarked those handy links on :)

National Geographic's online map area has a very comprehensive "terms of use" statement that you could probably use a framework for your own... but that said, I'd still watermark the images, since it's virtually impossible to prevent people from 'borrowing' online graphics.

Thank you, I'll check them out.
