Desktop shortcuts with Gnome

KDE has a way to create shortcuts on the desktop to launch apps, I can't for the life of me figure out how to make a shortcut with Gnome from Gnome. I can do it if I create a symlyink from ~/.gnome-desktop to the binary I want to link to, but does anyone know of a way to do it directly from Gnome?

The documentation for this isn't really good. You could open up Nautilus and drag and drop stuff from the menu into ~/.gnome-desktop/. That works, but then gnome create a shadow icon along with the regular -- 'Application and 'Application.desktop'. It's temporary though, after restarting gnome the shadows go away.
