The Bat! is what I use, and whilst not entirely familiar with kmail the bat has more features than I will probably ever use. Worth a look, theres a trial period. I think the site is ritlabs.com .

The Bat doesn't meet the following requirement: - you don't have milions of fields in the mail list display and don't have to set the columns for each mail folder separately or at least I haven't found any way how to configure the columns displayed globally.

There is a way but like many things in the bat its not readily apparent. Right click folder...choose properties - "use the account default column settings". You might want to click the help button at this point to get an idea of how it works :)

Thanks, I guess I'm not very good at reading Windows software's docs. There are also a few other annoying things in The Bat though, so if anybody else has a suggestion you're welcome.
