I don't think this says much about the overall health of the Linux market but here's the story:

[internetnews.com...]

Every other sector of the technology sector has been suffering a financial downturn, so why not Linux? Only Intel, Microsoft and Oracle with their large cash reserves seem untouched.

operating environment revenue declined

Parhaps not the best indicator of the strength of free software?

the only operating environment to experience positive revenue growth in 2001 was Microsoft's Windows

Larger companies tend to use Microsoft products. Why? They work and they work well, and they are supported. Yes, MS has it's issues, but the benefits, to someone running hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of systems, are enormous.

Yet another study:

It looks like OSX and Linux are quickly growing out of the "alternative" moniker.

With OSX being a relatively new OS, it looks like considerable strides are being made, a few years could make a major difference.

I'm glad to say that Apple has made the best Unix GUI ever, it's nice if it grabs some market share from M$.
