Missing ODP dump affecting FAST/ATW/ Lycos?
Lycos missing descriptions for ODP-listed pages

I noticed yesterday that one of my home pages which is listed in ODP with a unique ODP-created title is missing it's description in the Lycos SERPs. The ODP-created title is shown, but no description is presented. The page is #1 for its keyword, but has no description at all. If I use a weaker keyword in the search, causing my page to not come in #1, nothing changes - the description is still missing.

Checking on FAST/ATW, my page appears in their SERPs with its ODP title and a normal description, but with a displayed page size of 55 bytes(!). Another WebmasterWorld member's page - also listed in the ODP - appears similarly, but with a page size of 64 bytes.

Other pages on both sites which are not listed in ODP appear normally with regard to title and description on both Lycos and FAST/ATW, and with a normal byte count on FAST.

As stated, I have confirmed this to be a problem with one other WebmasterWorld member's site, but I'm wondering how widespread the problem is. We would also like to confirm or disprove that the problem is related to the page being listed in ODP.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

Thanks,
Jim

While that sounds like a rather plausible explanation I have a real life counter example at hand.
Doesn't overthrow the theory though. Problems being partially present at ATW is always possible because of the way they update their index in portions.

Thanks Heini,

The FAST crawler visits here several times a week, so I'll keep a closer eye on the FAST SERPs.

Neither one of these anomolies by itself would be cause for alarm, but having them both together, I feel that something may be wrong.

Anyone else with a positive example of missing description in Lycos with an ODP-listed site, or with an incorrect page size showing in FAST?

We have two fairly nervous WebmasterWorld members looking for input... :)

Thanks,
Jim

I tried the site search earlier today looking for an answer to why there was no "Description:" for my site on ATW and a size of 59 B. I checked Lycos and my site has no description at all, just the business name, for the same search term. On both engines I'm at #1 for this term.

Even stranger is that although I have been listed very well in ATW for a long time for a large number of secondary kw/phrases, I haven't shown up for my main kw for months - until today! Just for FYI, my main kw phrase is part of the anchor text in almost all links to my site.

A competitor who is listed in the same cat in ODP does show description and correct page size though and was listed as #1 in ATW for same kw until today.

Strange, hope this isn't something to worry about.

nancyb,

Thanks for the reply!

So your site is missing its description on ATW and on Lycos... as well as showing an incorrect page size on ATW. This is not exactly what I've seen on my site or the other site I mentioned, but it's close.

Hopefully, this is a transient condition as heini suggests. If not, and we're the only ones affected, we'll have compare notes in detail.

Jim
