We sell a product that due to high cost, customers feel more comfortable picking up the phone and ordering. Obviously this presents problems with tracking sales. Most people don't remember where they found us, never mind know the difference between sponsored listings and organic listings. So we are having problems calculating our ROI for PPC, Email blasts, Magazine ads, etc... people get to our site and enevitably wind up calling in and ordering. We do use an internal DB and the sales people ask the customer where they found us, but as you well know getting data this way is dodgy at best.
I was wondering if anyone else out there has a similar product and situation and what you've come up with to solve the problem of tracking these phone orders back to the original source.
You might try something like some real estate agents use. It is call adtrakker. You can put your toll-free number on your site and then use a database / sessions / cookies to enter the proper extension, i.e. 100 for Magazines, 200 for emails, etc
loudtracker might be one way to accomplish the above.
