msg:896672 | 9:10 pm on Aug 28, 2005 (gmt 0) | One of the most commonly asked questions in this forum is "what stats package do you recommend?". Webmasterworld is NOT the place for people to generally make specific recommendations. However, there comes a point where the question gets asked so many time that it needs a stock answer. Where has this question been asked (and more or less answered) before? [webmasterworld.com...] [webmasterworld.com...] [webmasterworld.com...] [webmasterworld.com...] [Conversion Tracking] [webmasterworld.com...] So, you can see that this question is well and truly in the spotlight. My thinking is that if you have/use a package or two, perhaps you can (in a very unbiased way) add to this list, Always using the following: Package name?: Target user Personal/small biz/med biz/big biz)?: Price range for target user?: Logfile based or Tagging based?: Sits on server / third party server / local your PC?: Reporting formats? (HTML, Email, CSV, WORD...): Tracks daily unique visitors as well as page views?: Gives geographic data?: Graphical or text based reporting?: Tracks Spiders?: Tracks conversion data for PPC campaigns? Tracks conversion data for natural search? Unusual Extras? I plan to do enormous amounts of editing in this thread... to try to keep some consistency. Here are the ones I have experience with... (HTML, Email, CSV, WORD...): All of these Tracks daily unique visitors as well as page views?: Yes Gives geographic data?: Yes Graphical or text based reporting?: Both Tracks Spiders?: Yes Tracks conversion data for PPC campaigns? Not well Tracks conversion data for natural search? No Unusual Extras? In theory, license only allows you to analyse logs on one server (regardless of number of sites). msg:896677 | 5:12 am on Aug 30, 2005 (gmt 0) | Package name?: Urchin Stats Target user Personal/small biz/med biz/big biz)?: Should work for any size. Have to customize settings though for larger sites. Price range for target user?: Free in my case. Actual cost unknown. Logfile based or Tagging based?: Logging is standard. Believe option available for tagging. Sits on server / third party server / local your PC?: Sits on server. May be configured to be on a stats server if desired. Reporting formats? (HTML, Email, CSV, WORD...): HTML, CSV Tracks daily unique visitors as well as page views?: Yes Gives geographic data?: Yes Graphical or text based reporting?: Both Tracks Spiders?: Yes Tracks conversion data for PPC campaigns?: Optional. Has to be set up seperately but can be done. I haven't used this option. Tracks conversion data for natural search? Yes. Also optional. Unusual Extras? : Free with many web hosting accounts. Nice interface. Very detailed if settings are configured properly. My Conclusion - Urchin, now owned by Google I believe, is an awesome stats package. It can be a bit slow at times due to heavy graphical interface. It is excellent at reporting page views, geographical data and ALL organic search terms from all SE's. Very easy to use. Trick to Urchin is configuring it properly. The "default" comes a bit stripped down which will work fine for small sites without much traffic but will frustrate larger sites. This frustration can be removed by changing the settings to allow for larger table size so Urchin can hold more data. "Physics" adds: There are two types of urchin (at least): the one that's free with most web hosts and the $200/month javascript tag one that has advanced features and roi tracking and stuff (I think ... haven't used it but sat through some presentations . Anway I wanted to post that in the thread but don't want to start a discussion.) [edited by: Receptional at 7:13 am (utc) on Sep. 5, 2005] [edit reason] Added Physic's comment [/edit]

msg:896678 | 5:19 am on Aug 30, 2005 (gmt 0) | Package name?: Livestats/Deepmetrix Target user Personal/small biz/med biz/big biz)?: All Price range for target user?: Free with many hosting accounts. Unsure of actual cost but think it is relatively expensive. Logfile based or Tagging based?: Logfile standard. Believe tagging is optional. Sits on server / third party server / local your PC?: Sits on server. Also setup on a seperate stats server. Reporting formats? (HTML, Email, CSV, WORD...): HTML, CSV Tracks daily unique visitors as well as page views?: Yes Gives geographic data?: Yes Graphical or text based reporting?: Both, with heavy use of graphics. racks Spiders?: Recognizes spiders, but does not track them. Tracks conversion data for PPC campaigns?: Unsure Tracks conversion data for natural search? : Unsure Unusual Extras?: Real time stats reporting. Very nice graphics. My Conclusion : A very nice concept that is missing one absolutely key component - Deep Metrixs (or at least the version I used last year) does NOT track organic search phrases. It keeps tab on keywords used. But it splits search phrases up into keywords - and does not report phrases used. Thus, a search in Google that leads to your site for "some term" will not be shown as a keyword phrase. Instead, it shows up in the keyword reports as "some" and "term". This makes tracking your targeted keyword phrases nearly impossible. [edited by: Receptional at 7:15 am (utc) on Sep. 5, 2005] [edit reason] Formatting changed only [/edit]

Can tag user groups based on entry page or query string. Can view stats 'on page' on your site, i.e. shows a graphical overlay of any page with what percentage of visitors clicked which link ... this is the best feature really (if you set a conversion goal tag you can look at how many people that actually converted clicked say a link on your home page as opposed to people who didn't convert). Also tracks time on site for different visitors. Gives geographic data?: Yes (Optimizer and up) Graphical or text based reporting?: Both? Others can do 'cost analysis'. Unusual Extras? : Analyze a group of interconnected web sites (pro), Analyze sites running on multiple/load-balanced servers (hosted and pro) Did I mention that 'overlay' view of your site rocks? Features I wish it had: Support for non-standard log file formats. This isn't that hard to implement really. Just allow the user to say what fields are in what order and what the delimiter / text qualifier is. You can compare the different packages in a table view on their web site. It's pretty nice that one can get in on this advanced software for $50/month with the Analyzer hosted.

msg:896691 | 7:24 am on Sep 5, 2005 (gmt 0) | Well - that went better than expected! Firstly, thanks to everyone who posted, for being objective and for sticking to the point. I hope this thread proves to be a useful resource for years to come, and is destined for the Tracking and Logging document library [webmasterworld.com] Because this thread borders on soliciting for business, I am taking the unusual step of locking the thread now. If anyone wants to add a significant package, or request that something here is updated, please sticky me. In doing so, please cut and paste the format above, so I don't have to spend ages changing your sticky. I would like to limit this to stats packages that have at least come off Beta and have some market penetration please. THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE. Dixon.
