Couldn't remember if this program has been mentioned here but I have been very pleased by the freeware program IrfanView 32 [stud4.tuwien.ac.at]. It had high user approval at Download.com so I gave it a try. It has better quality resizing than Paint Shop Pro and has some very easy to use features. I don't have much knowledge with graphics programs but for just resizing and cropping, it has saved me some cash.

The great thing about Irfan View is that it handles the .ico format for creating those favicons for MSIE Favorites.

If the only time you create an icon is for a website, then investing in a full blown program like Icon Forge may not make sense, and this little baby is the answer for me.

<suspense> . . . </suspense>

I know... I know... don't get my hopes up...

That little program is one of the unsung heroes of the web, just about indispensable for anyone who just needs a simple little tool for resizing and cropping.

It also does a fine job of compressing jpegs. When I hosted a beginners help board, there were so many who asked over and over again about their pages loading slow. Turned out 99% of the time it was photos about the size of wall hangings.

To save time and repetition, I did a little tutorial on using the program and put it on my help site, with a link to the download. It was constantly referred to by the other people who posted to that board.

Nice thing is that it works so beautifully, and is perfect for someone who has no need for anything more. I'm surprised it hasn't gone shareware by now.
